Family-friendly science discovery centres near you
Kids love pressing buttons, making lights flash and discovering something new. So we are very lucky that our region has some of the best interactive science centres open to families.
Whether your child already has a passion for science or just needs to go somewhere stimulating on a dull day, all of these child-friendly science exhibits provide a great family day out.
Famous for its massive white telescope dominating the Cheshire plain, Jodrell Bank is one of the best places to take kids for a science-themed day out. There are lots of kid-friendly interactive exhibits providing plenty of stimulation for even the hardest-to-please child. Book one of the fabulous science shows during school holidays. There are tailored sessions for the under 7s. Outdoors there are 35 acres of gardens including outdoor exhibits, play area and a trail. Have lunch or a snack in the cafe overlooking the Lovell Telescope.
The World Museum in Liverpool
The World Museum is an incredibly kid-friendly museum with plenty of interactive activities and events. Science-oriented children will love the planetarium with its frequent daily shows (small charge) aimed at different age groups. There’s also a space gallery where you can see moon rocks, meteorites and rockets. In addition to the science stuff, kids are drawn to the famous Egyptian collection, the aquarium, the bug house, the dinosaurs and fossils. And the great news is that entry to the museum and most of the activities are free.
Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)
MOSI is also free to enter! You can discover the story of the history, science and industry of Manchester. In the permanent exhibit there are interactive hands-on activities for kids including an infinity mirror, a tornado machine, and giant coloured columns filled with bubbles. They hold kids activities at weekends and school holidays as well as science shows.
Catalyst in Widnes
The Scientriffic Gallery in Catalyst Science Discovery Centre has over 40 hands-on technology exhibits. Kids can try generating electricity, discovering colourful crystals or making big bubbles. At weekends and in the holidays children can see science shows, take part in family events and enjoy free workshops. Go to the top floor to see out of the rooftop glass observatory.
Techniquest Glyndŵr in Wrexham
Techniquest is a science discovery centre in North Wales with over 65 hands-on exhibits, activities and puzzles that kids will love. They hold lots of family-friendly events, shows and workshops. Kids can also attend coding clubs, astronomy sessions and toddler days. You can even have a science party in the centre.
Spaceport in Wirral
There are lots of hands-on interactive exhibits at this space-themed scientific attraction. Take a ride on the Space Ride cosmic coaster. Watch space shows at weekends and in the school holidays in the 360 degree Space Dome. Sci-fi Icons is a display of Star War memorabilia! Save money with a combined ticket for Mersey Ferries and the U-boat Story if your planning a family day out.
