How to get kids active whatever the weather

Kids really need to burn off energy if they’re not going to get bored. But it’s a struggle to get kids physically active when all they want to do is stare at their screens. Especially if it’s wet outside.

While there are lots of sports clubs holding short holiday courses, what if you just want an afternoon out doing something lively and different? Here are some ideas for places to get your children active, try something new but stay indoors!

Swimming has got to be the first choice for being active on a wet day. After all if you are wet already … Contact your local pool for opening times and any special family swim or fun splash sessions.

Climbing walls
Most indoor climbing walls do taster sessions with instruction. They often have special kids’ sessions or extended opening hours in the holidays. May need pre-booking.

Ice skating
Slightly embarrassing when kids skate off while you hang to the edge. But great fun anyway.

Indoor soft play centres
The go to way to burn off  the boundless energy of younger kids. And they serve coffee! Many do special activities on certain days of  the week so it’s worth checking ahead.

Covered golf driving ranges
A rare chance to shelter from the rain while still getting fresh air. Most ranges can rent out clubs of all sizes for all ages.
